Brief Response
Hannah gives us a troubled character in Frances “Frankie”
McGrath. Sheltered for most of her life, she enlists in the Army’s nurse corps
and ships off to Vietnam after learning of her beloved brother's death. Through
Frankie’s eyes, readers experience love and war, life and death, joy and
fear, and the all-too-common post-traumatic stress disorder that many Veterans
are familiar with. Though the latter half isn’t as compelling as the first, The
Women gives readers a main character they can relate to, who comes out on
top, if not unscathed. Recommended for fans of Hannah’s other works and those
interested in this less popular era.
